NRA Home Firearm Safety Course

Short Description : Non-shooting course and teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and to
explain the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the
home.


More Details: This is a four-hour course for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom
only. Students are taught NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling; primary causes of firearms
accidents; firearm parts; how to unload certain action types; ammunition components; cleaning;
care; safe storage of firearms in the home; and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the
shooting sports. Students will receive the NRA Home Firearm Safety handbook, NRA Gun Safety
Rules brochure, Basic Firearm Training Program brochure, course completion certificate. (Lesson
Plan 6-90, reprint 12-08).

NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course

Short Description : Teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a
pistol safely.


More Details: This course is at least 8-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to
shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols.

This course is for students with little or no experience.

Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting
fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing
positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students can
expect to shoot 50 rounds. The ammunition requirements are minimum and may be exceeded.
Rental Guns are available if you do not have one. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics
of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship
Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and course completion

OUR NRA "Personal Protection In The Home" course is recognized by the State of Michigan to fulfill
the training requirements to obtain your
Michigan CCW / CPL Concealed Pistol License.

Short Description : Teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and
efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-
abiding individual’s right to self-defense.

More Details:
This is a 1 day, eight-hour course.   Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills,
strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to
choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development.

Students will receive a
minimum of 8 hours classroom time and range time. This course complies
with section 5j of 1927 PA 372. Students can expect to shoot 30 rounds. The ammunition
requirements are minimum and may be exceeded. Rental Guns are available if you do not have one.

NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by
applicable federal, state, or local law, and experienced shooters to maximize what can be learned
from this course.

Participants must also understand the basic legal concepts relating to the use of firearms in self-
defense, and must know and observe not only general gun safety rules, but also those safety
principles that are specific to defensive situations.

Northern Firearms Training is an instructional institution with a fixed Location and Phone Number.
We are Fully Licensed, Bonded and Insured for Your protection as well as ours. Our location is
staffed Full Time. Firearms Training is our Full Time job, not a side job for extra income. If your

Northern Firearms Training's (Non-NRA)
3 Hour Pistol Refresher Course.

This Course was developed to meet the needs of those wishing to receive a certificate of completion
for the mandatory training requirements to renew your Michigan CPL.

In this 3 hour course, we will go over the law and any changes made to it in the last 5 years since
obtaining your CPL.  We will go over your roles and responsibility's for safely handling & storing
your pistol when not at home, and shoot a box of ammo on the range.

On completion of this course you will receive a certificate of completion from Northern Firearms
Training indicating 3 hours of classroom and range time.

COST $60.00 for Day and $80.00 for Night Classes offered 7 days a week.

NRA  Personal Protection Outside The Home Course


Short Description : Comprehensive and intensive in its approach to equip the defensive shooting
candidate with the skills needed to survive serious adversity.

More Details: The course teaches students the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding
dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective and responsible use of a concealed pistol for
self-defense outside the home. Students have the opportunity to attend this course using a quality
strong side hip holster that covers the trigger, or a holster purse. From a review of safe firearms
handling and proper mindset to presentation from concealment and multiple shooting positions, this
course contains the essential skills and techniques needed to prevail in a life-threatening situation.

The NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home is divided into two levels (basic and advanced).
Level one is a nine-hour course and offers the essential knowledge and skills that must be mastered
in order to carry, store, and use a firearm safely and effectively for personal protection outside the
home. Upon completion of level one, students may choose to attend level two, which is an additional
five hours of range training and teaches advanced shooting skills. After the classroom portion,
students should expect to spend several hours on the range and shoot approximately 100 rounds of
ammunition during level one. Level two involves five additional hours on the range and
approximately 150 rounds of ammunition. The ammunition requirements are minimum and may be
exceeded. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside The
Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure and the appropriate course completion
certificates(s), NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside The Home (identifies strong-side hip holster
or purse use) certificate, and NRA Advanced Personal Protection Outside The Home certificate.

The NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home is for adult individuals who are not
disqualified from possessing a firearm as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law and are of
good repute and possess defensive pistol skills presented in the NRA Basics of Personal Protection
In The Home Course. Participants must also understand the basic legal concepts relating to the use
of firearms in self-defense, and must know and observe not only general gun safety rules, but also
those safety principles that are specific to defensive situations. Prospective participants can
demonstrate that they have the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes by producing an NRA
Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course Certificate

Level 1 Cost  $175.00  plus  100 rounds & Hoister needed.
Level 2 Cost  $25.00  plus  150 rounds & Hoister needed.

NRA-NMLRA Basic Muzzleloading Pistol Shooting Course

Short Description : Teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and
efficient use of a muzzleloading pistol.


More Details: The course is 12 hours in length and includes classroom time and instruction on a
range shooting a muzzleloading pistol. Each student learns the NRA’s three rules for safe gun
handling; parts of a percussion, flintlocks and revolvers; cleaning; shooting from the standing
position; identifying failure to fire; and benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting
sports. Students will receive the Muzzleloading Pistol handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure,
Muzzleloading Student Examination, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, course
completion certificate.

Tactical Handgun 1  (NON-NRA COURSE)

This Intermediate Shooting Class is designed for the person who is knowledgeable in basic firearms
skills. The student may have taken one or more basic shooting classes, has practiced those skills
regularly, will hit their target most of the time, and may be able to clear most malfunctions. This class
will expound upon the basic shooting principles. It will include instruction on shooting at multiple
targets under timed or stressful conditions, and shooting in different positions. It also addresses the
proper display and usage of the handgun in personal defense, and storage and carry situations.  A
strong side holster or holster purse is required for this class.

NOTICE: This class is not for the new or inexperienced shooters. This class is moderately physically
and mentally challenging. Students will be put under stressful conditions. Learning to perform under
stress is crucial to prevailing in a defensive encounter.

This class is almost  80% range time at an outdoor range. Range drills are completed with 1 to 1
student instructor ratios. Preregistration face to face interviews with prospective participants
wishing to enroll in this course are mandatory.   

Length: Two days, 16 hours
Ammunition Needed: 750 Rounds

Cost: $400   $100 Deposit required for registration

Tactical Handgun 2  (NON-NRA COURSE)

This Advanced Shooting Class is designed for the individual who is looking for more challenge in
their shooting skills. This person is very proficient at using their handgun and would like to learn
techniques to refine their precision skills. This class will teach how to shoot on the move and shoot
at moving targets. It will teach the proper use of cover and concealment for personal defense, and
reality drills involving shoot and no shoot situations, and decision-making involving the concealed
carry of a handgun. Drills are designed to challenge the shooter and build confidence in handling
skills. This class has extensive range time and uses advanced target report technology (legal
exploding targets, steel targets, breakable targets & glow targets) In this class you will also train
under low light / night conditions.

The student is required to have taken Tactical Handgun 1, an equivalent class, or hold a
classification of an expert or higher in any competition handgun discipline and must show proof of
such before registration.

NOTICE:
This class is NOT for the new or inexperienced shooter. This class is severely physically
and mentally challenging. Students will be put under stressful conditions. Learning to perform under
stress is crucial to prevailing in a defensive encounter.

This class is almost  80% range time at an outdoor range. Range drills are completed with 1 to 1
student instructor ratios. Preregistration face to face interviews with prospective participants
wishing to enroll in this course are mandatory.   


Length: Two days, 16 hours
Ammunition Needed: 1000 Rounds

Tactical Handgun 3  "Entry" (Shoot House)

This Advanced Shooting Class is designed for the individual who is looking for more challenge in
their shooting skills. This person is very proficient at using their handgun and would like to learn
techniques to refine their precision skills. This class will teach how to shoot on the move and shoot
at moving targets using the Tactical Team approach. It will teach the proper use of cover and
concealment for personal defense, team communications and reality drills involving shoot and no
shoot situations, and decision-making involving the concealed carry of a handgun by someone in
an occupied building.(room clearing, who is good, who is bad?) Drills are designed to challenge the
shooter and build confidence in handling skills. This class has extensive range time and uses
advanced target report technology (legal exploding targets, steel targets, breakable targets, moving
targets & glow targets) In this class you will also train under low light / night conditions.

NOTE: Our shoot house is of modular design giving us the capability to change floor plans every
time you enter building.

The student is required to have taken Tactical Handgun 2, an equivalent class, or hold a
classification of an expert or higher in any competition handgun discipline and must show proof of
such before registration.

NOTICE:
This class is NOT for the new or inexperienced shooter. This class is severely physically
and mentally challenging. Students will be put under stressful conditions. Learning to perform under
stress is crucial to prevailing in a defensive encounter.

This class is almost  80% range time at an outdoor range. Range drills are completed with 3 to 1
student instructor ratios. Preregistration face to face interviews with prospective participants
wishing to enroll in this course are mandatory.

Reactionary Steel Shooting  (NON-NRA COURSE)

This is an intermediate shooting class for the person who has practiced the basic skills and wants to
learn to elevate their skill level. This class is range intensive. The entire day is spent shooting steel
targets where the sound of the “clang” will reinforce what your handgun sights tell you. Most drills
are conducted from a strong side holster. The class will include instruction on the proper
presentation of the handgun to quickly engage and hit their target. It will cover the proper method of
clearing malfunctions. It will include some one-handed shooting and shooting while moving. Most
drills are done under time limits and include some decision making to induce stress. This is a
moderately-paced class and one that will allow the shooter to push their ability to shoot faster and
more accurately. The student is required to have taken the Basic Handgun Safety Course, or an
equivalent class.

Length: One Day, 8 hours
Ammunition Needed: 500 Rounds

Cost: $150  $100 Deposit required for registration
